ISRO has successfully launched its first spacecraft (aptly named Chandrayaan-1) this morning on an unmanned scientific mission to Moon, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota. India joins an exclusive list of nations, like USA, Russia, China, Japan and European Space Agency that have sent missions to the moon. The satellite was launched by a PSLV-C11 (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) rocket, which has been a workhorse of Indian Space Programme with 12 consecutive successful launches behind it.
Post Note on 25th November 2008:
Chandrayaan-1 is now in Lunar polar orbit at an altitude of 100 kms and is beaming back photographs and other information on the lunar terrain.
